    Bee and Sage

Going through some older files and came across this. Shot was made in 2004 with my first digital camera, an Olympus E20N. Early one morning so many bees were around the sage buses I decided to pick a blossom and wait for a be to approach. Using the built-in flash and backlight from the sun I got this. Somewhat grainy since it is a cropped section from a 5mb file. C&C always.

Hi Dean Very nice shot, I like the composition and colors but I don't like the strong vignette-like thing. I would also clone the half leaf on the very RHS.

He means sages bushes, Geoff...He just forgot the h somewhere in his spelling...

Very nice shot, Dean but what is that white spot in the bee's tummy? Is it preggy?

The white stuff, Izzie, is pollen on her hind legs. Or are you looking at something else?

It might be a honey bee; although some other species also collect it to provide a food store for their larvae.

Thanks all for the comments. It is a honey bee and Geoff is right about the pollen.

Barbara, I have new equipment, but have never been able to duplicate the shot. That particular morning there were so many bees on the plant all I had to do was pick a bloom and wait a couple of seconds. This was before the problem with the hives dying for no apparent reason.

Dean...I remember 2 years ago when the bees are about, I also have some sugar water for the cute little birdies to drink and they swarm on it. I think I will do that again and get busy photographing them. I haven't bought my butterfly catcher yet but I will soon enough, so that will be an interesting subject to shoot...

A great capture to get one in flight like this.
