Another road disappearing off into the distance

Wandering around the North York Moors in England a couple of weeks ago.

I was struggling to 'see' this image and thought the RAW file was destined for the waste basket. I'm usually pretty good at 'seeing' the final image at the time of capture, but in this case I just couldn't reproduce what I saw at the time. However, this evening it just sort of fell into place. Whether it's any good is for you to judge. Comments are always welcome.

A fine capture Donald. I really like the way the light on the road works with the rest of the image. Combine that with the moody sky plus the mist in the distance and I'm sold!

I'm with Dave! The way the road is lit is tremendous, if you told me someone had shined a gridded or flagged speedlight on just the road, I'd believe you.
The curving road is icing on the cake. I nearly suggested removing the road sign, wh but ch I'm guessing warns drivers of curves ahead... But thought better of it, an element of the scene, that contributes to the whole.

I love the composition and as much as I like the processing, I think I would like to see a very low contrast version of this. Not saying I would prefer it, but I think I'd like a chance to compare. Definitely looks like a location that requires multiple visits.

I guess if you wanted a lowering, dramatic sky, receding landscape, interesting geology highlighted by a reflective, zigurat receding roadway in an excellent range of tonalities and details, then I guess you nailed it. If, on the other hand, you wanted a macro of a flower's stamen, you've missed entirely.

It's a good thing you didn't use the Delete key. I like it a lot. It reminds me of a photo of a road in Pennsylvania published in A Day in the Life of America.

Consider cropping at the top to eliminate the uppermost layer of clouds to eliminate the contest between sky and road and, thus, to place even greater emphasis on the road.

In spite of not being a landscape guy, I gotta agree with Mike...putting the horizon at the upper
third might improve the image, drawing more attention to the winding road.

I first looked at this on my tablet by the window and could see hardly any detail, just the silver snake! I thought that it was a beach.

Having now looked at it, for some time, on my desktop I am still trying to decide how much I like it. I am not usually a B&W person, but this image conveys something extraordinary. I would probably agree with those who would not crop the uppermost clouds. I think the lowering cloudscape is part of the picture.

I think this is a very dramatic scene. You have that wonderful leading line of the road drawing the viewer through the layers of the landscape and into the menacing storm. I wouldn't crop it at all. I think the leaden cloud makes this image. The 'contest' Mike refers to may be seen as a battle of the elements (sky and land) - or man and nature - as that preponderating sky is threatening to overwhelm the land.
