    The door is closed

Out at Dads building today was really strange. We had the auction the other weekend and now the building that was full of Dads collections is now empty. I don't think I will be back very often now. As I closed the door, this seemed fitting.

Very poignant, Jon. Can I suggest a bit of sharpening, just on the middle part of the handle....

A very well made picture and with the benefit of knowing the context, a very powerful one as well.

I find it interesting of how I can see a hundred old handles but none so graciously exposed as the ones with a story like yours.

Well done Jon and may your Dad continue to patina your heart as his hands did with this handle.

Izzie, yes I think this is somewhat of closure for me. I didn't have much of a problem going out to the building when all of Dads collections were still there. Now, since it is empty, it has an eerie feel to it.

Thanks Donald. It has been an emotional 229 days since he has passed. But every day I get up and move on, what else can we do??

Thank you David. Dad will ALWAYS be part of me. He is, and always has been, the man I strive to be like...but fear I will not be able to.

OK, I did not go back to the building, just thought I would work one up in color.
It does not have the same feel as the B&W version to me but I am interested in your thoughts.

    Cheers

The colour image is a 'nice' image. The colours in it are beautiful. But, for me, it certainly doesn't have the 'punch' or the starkness of the B & W.

    I feel your loss, Jon...the emptiness...it hurts.

Anyway, moving on...Although I like the colour version, I prefer the subtleness and the tone of the Black and White. I am not a B/W expert yet but that one has more appeal to my eyes than the coloured one.

    Re: The door is closed

Well, this is a different image to the first one. The first uses tone and texture: this one is more complex as it employs colour as well - and being less 'stark' than the first, it tells a different story.

One thing that bothers me, Jon is the right hand side - it seems too smooth compared to the texture in the timber in the rest of the door. I would prefer the right hand side to be cropped similarly to the original b&w.

I like the colours in this edit. There is a warm blue on the left and a subtle yellow on the right with a rich rusty brown in the middle. But for me (and I am certainly no expert) the cool grays in the middle seem out of place. If it were mine I might try cropping more of the right hand side to remove the yellow tones - then the grays might marry in with the blues on the left - or play with hues and curves to introduce some yellow into those timbers in the middle. Just a thought.

The black and white is the better presentation. Sorry for your loss.
