Spring Thunderstorm opinions , Critique and Comment

( The internet worked fitfully this morning, enough to upload something finally)

My wife (and go to person for artistic approval) does not like the black and white version. In her opinion landscapes need to be in colour. I like the emphasis on texture the black and white brings to the image. The discussion has been very civil to this point. Since I am male there is quite a large risk I am wrong just on first principles.

Any opinion or critique is very welcome

Which prompts me to ask - if a man says something and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?

    I quite like the B&W.

As she is your wife you will of course be wrong, but that by no means means she is right.
For me it's the B&W all the way, I see more detail in the B&W, it has more mood, texture, foreboding...the color version just looks like a passing spring shower; all daisies, dandelions, daffodils and ducks.
Until and unless your lovely wife equals or surpasses you in photographic ability I strongly suggest the B&W, go against her judgement, hang your head for an appropriate amount of time and be happy you picked the better version.

I like both of them but if I had to choose I would prefer B&W

Color for me, certain hues just have a different appeal to the eyes and blue is one of those that does it for me. I like the nice complement of golden land in this one as well.

Well yes, generally landscapes are best in colour. But that is a cloudscape and certainly looks stunning in monochrome. Particularly when viewed at full screen size.

I agree with the B/W votes. It has great texture and a feeling for the upcoming storm.
The colour version does really nothing for me.
Of course, I'm a woman and I'm never wrong!

For me Trevor, it's the B&W by a country mile ! The mono treatment brings out so much more detail in the sky and clouds.

That could only ever be a B & W image .... if that's okay with you Mrs R!

    In colour, it's a pretty picture. Mediocre, but pretty. In B & W, it's a dramatic image.

My feelings as well. (apart from the mediocre bit of course! but I may be biased)

I definitely like the B&W better. It feels more cohesive as a storm picture. In the color version, it's a mix of lovely color and foreboding clouds.

In general, I often tend to like the colour versions of image better, in this case, the B&W is definitely the more powerful image.

My thought's are really much along the same line as Dave's. The colour image is about the scenery and the bright foreground has equal billing to the brewing storm. In the B&W version, it's all about the storm clouds and the foreground plays a much more minor role in the scene.

Remember Trevor -- Happy wife, Happy Life...but I can choose the B/W between these two shots which I really like here. You can't. Does that say anything to you?

Does it say that after 37 years of marriage I have learned to pick my battles? Or more to the point, I have learned to pick battles where Trish is not a participant or has a "horse in the race"?

I like them both! See, I didn't have to pick a side that way Honestly I think it would depend on where you were going to hang the photograph. That just means it's so good that it has many options.
