    Charlie - Mini Goldendoodle

Charlie is a 22 pound Mini Goldendoodle (mother is a Golden Retriever and dad is a miniature poodle). Charlie came to us from a foster home in Arizona. He has a bad left rear leg and can put weight on it at times, while other times he will not place any weight on it. The vet in Arizona gave him Metacam for the pain and wanted to amputate. However, the vet had not even taken X-rays. Doodle Rescue Collective, Inc. transferred Charlie to us and we have him scheduled for a workup with a top-notch veterinary orthopedic surgeon who has saved the limbs of many of our foster rescue dogs. We hope that amputation is not in order but, totally trust our vet whatever the decision.

Some story, great work you do. The third image is a real heart-tugger. Maybe, and I hope after some love and orthopedics, we'll get a before and after of this guy - the latter with a smile.

    Amazing diagnosis

Surprising verdict or diagnosis from the orthopedic vet (who is top-notch in his field). He took X-rays and strongly believes that the problems with Charlie's stifle (knee joint) have been caused by a fungal infection. This type of fungal infection is prevalent both in the Phoenix Arizona area and also in the central valley of California.

He has sent a blood sample to the lab for testing and we should get the results in a day or two.

He assures me that if this is a fungal infection, it cannot be transmitted to the other dogs living with me. The vet also took X-rays of Charlie's lungs and thankfully there is no fungal infection there.

If it is fungal related, anti fungal medication will be the treatment.

    Hooray! Hooray!

Charlie has tested positive for a fungal infection. He will be taking an anti-fungal medication pill twice daily for an undetermined length of time. THIS MEANS NO AMPUTATION!!!!!

Dr. Cambridge, our wonderful vet (who diagnosed the problem as fungus related) did research on where we can get the best price on the medication. He found a veterinary pharmacy in Arizona and sent them a prescription for the medication.

The price of the meds is important since we expect Charlie to be on those meds for several months. The mail order pharmacy will supply us the meds which will cost us only about $15.00 USD a month.

Good news Richard...you still have a complete limbs doggie. Lesser trauma too.

    Re: Hooray! Hooray!

Charlie has been on his anti fungal medication for a couple of weeks now and he seems to be putting more weight on his leg...

BTW: The chickens are lit by a heat lamp which results in the somewhat weird color balance...

They will be moving to the hen house as soon as they are a bit older and it gets a little warmer.

    Charlie - Mini Goldendoodle

The hen house is located in an area fenced off from the rest of my yard which will protect them from the dogs as we expect the hens to be free ranging chickens. The area is under oak trees and we have installed a net over the one area in which they could be prey to hawks...

Izzie, although I would like to keep him, we are getting to old to keep anymore young dogs. He is very adoptable now but, might very well outlive us and he won't be as adoptable then...

I understand...we only have Roxie now and she is nearly 4 years. I hope we outlive her too.
