The overlap in focal lengths is very important. Not much is needed and a large overlap is not desirable.

I stock my camera bag with camera and one additional lens. Sometimes, I wish I'd a different supplemental lens, but not often.

That said, I also, usually, have two or three camera bags in the vehicle.

I have three modes of travel:

    1. The compact for trips to the store.
    2. The bridge and compact for everyday (to work, the park, special events within the neighborhood).
    3. The bridge, the compact, and the DSLR with 18-55 and 70-300mm lens for very special events. Both lenses and the bridge fit inside one bag, and the compact is usually worn on the belt.

I wonder what was/is the choice of accessories for a war correspondent of yesterday and today?

Yesterday: one lens for every photo opportunity.
    Today: ???????

This is all good advice from Rob but I would add I've got into the habit of checking the area before I leave, and if you have a car, I haven't, you could use it.
Another common one (and I do this myself) is to leave your extension tubes lying around gathering dust. Then put them on your camera and the dust gets circulated around the chamber, and onto your sensor. I suppose you should store them in a plastic bag or something.

I consider anything that goes into the optical path, including adapters and extension tubes, as requiring the same level of handling and protection as any lens.
