Jetty, Duvauchelle South Island New Zealand

It was a miserably cold and wet summer's day when I took this photo last December. Duvauchelle is on the Banks Peninsula and was an area originally settled by the French. A bit touristy nowadays but there is a lovely French atmosphere to some of the villages. It was very dark but fortunately I took a bracketed set and although no one image was particularly striking I have tinkered with my HDR software and achieved (I hope) something akin to the actual view.

Are those real rails, for wagons to load say, minerials onto boats or barges?

Anyway, it looks (very) good to me PP-wise, nice tonal range, natural colours and yet still atmospheric, well done.

Yes Dave, they are rails and that is a kind of railway carriage loaded with planks of timber at the end of the jetty. Not too sure what they were for but I am just a simple Aussie. I have noticed that your average Kiwi is a devilishly cunning and ingenious fellow who can build just about anything from a couple of planks of timber, a ball of string and some duct tape so the mind boggles at the engineering potential of this scene

Estimates suggest that native forest once covered 98% of the peninsula. However, Māori and European settlers successively denuded the forest cover and less than 2% remains today, although some reforestation has started. European settlers have planted many English trees, notably walnut.

So I guess it was to export the timber.
