    Book Shelf Reflections

Whilst sitting at our dining table, I was puzzled by the reflections in the base of a bowl that we had recently been given. On getting my camera out to photograph it, I discovered that they were of the books on the book case behind. This was not the easiest thing to photograph because the reflections (perhaps I should say refractions) were out of focus when the bowl base was in focus.

Interesting shot John The bowl together with its reflection might make a good image too.

Thanks Binnur, I thought of including the whole bowl, but I would have had to deal with rather more distracting background. It won't be going away, so perhaps I will have another go.

this is a great start! I am hoping that you continue to explore the potential in the shot.

I like it John...you must find a way to shoot that bowl too with a small solid coloured background behind it perhaps. I like Binnur's idea...

This is especially interesting to me, John. That's because I set up my makeshift studio to easily prevent exterior objects from appearing in my photos of glass, whereas your photo intentionally displays the books on the shelves. I wonder if it's possible using a tripod to capture everything in focus in one capture by using a small aperture. If not, perhaps you use focus-stacking software and can make it happen that way.

I had just finished doing that when I came up and read your message! Here it is:

I was thinking of the composition of the first photo and the depth of field of the second photo.

That's a gorgeous bowl, John. The swirls would be great for shooting it using the dark-field style or the bright-field style (with apologies for taking you to my web site).

I really like playing with reflections and I think you have the props here for some great experimenting. The bowl is wonderful.
