    Adolf Hitler COLORIZATION

    Hi Everybody,

So this weekend I was going through WWII photos trying to find another one to color and among them would be these random Adolf Hitler b&w's, paintings, posters but none of them were colored correctly or looked real. I felt kind of conflicted coloring this photo of Hitler since my Great Uncle and some cousins were killed by nazis in WWII. It's very eerie to see him in color I think. What do you guys think? Should I have left this one out of my collection?

Hitler IS creepy. The colourization makes him look more like to neighbor next door. Too close for comfort.

    But good job, though.

Grainy look works as film replication, however I believe the scan has made it too uniform. The original scratches make it look more authentic. Nicely done.

Thanks. I overlay my colors so that the original isn't altered in any way.

Sorry but his image should not be posted at all.

    The man was evil.

And then there's the part about how he was a psychopathic evil murderer.

What do you guys think? Should I have left this one out of my collection?
Yes. Thank you for allowing me to state my personal opinion via freedom of speech. Have a wonderful day.

p.s. - this should have been posted in the "people and pets" category of the forum

Zak, I think you have answered your own question. Personally I have no issues with viewing images of Hitler, but I grew up (in the 50's), in a city that was devastated by WWII raids.

My mother was a nurse in Coventry and was posted 20 miles down the road to Leamington Spa the night before the Coventry blitz. She lost all her friends and colleagues the following evening when the hospital was totally destroyed in the fire storm that developed. I have many European friends, (my wife is half Polish), and in truth, I would not be able to present your image to them as an example of colourisation technique and expect them to not be critical of the choice of subject.
While I can take an 'academic' view of the colourisation, I have to admit to being uncomfortable with this image being presented.

I think this is an image that cannot be considered or reviewed without all the baggage of history coming to the fore.

I do not agree with other members who suggest removing it, but I would much prefer it had not been posted.

Thank you for the input everybody. I guess that answers my question of whether or not I should colorize Stalin.

It made me realize I'm on the wrong forum. Good day all.

Whilst we find what Hitler did in terms of his policies, to be gross and inhuman, your have a right to use his image in an artistic endeavour. I note the unhappiness of some to have his image posted on the forum and their views are also acknowledged.

Thanks, Donald. I won't post anymore colorizations of bad guys. At least in this forum anyways.

Look up Mads Madsen colorization tutorial. He and I have very similar techniques. I learned from him.

The problem is - Who defines 'the bad guys'? And that's why any attempt at censorship has to be very carefully considered. There are a few names I'd suggest, but I suspect they wouldn't find universal agreement on this, or any other, forum.

Great work on that image, and it does give it more power as it makes an iconic monster from the past into something closer to a real person, which makes his ideology and actions perhaps even more disturbing.

And I am not one for over-censoring. It is a shame that some are uncomfortable with you posting this image. However, I see nothing in it that is glorifying or even condoning Nazism or making light of the atrocities committed. In fact, for the reasons given above, its impact is opposite. And you thoughtfully warned of the content in the thread title, so that those who would feel uncomfortable with it could avoid it.

I would like to see this treatment tried on other villains of history, so don't abandon your plans on Stalin just yet. It forces us to address and view them, not just as names from the past, but as real people. Very powerful.

And this is from another European with family affected by WWII (my father lost his leg and it changed his life, for the worse), so I am not talking as someone who blithely dismisses the impact this man had on the world. But art is a useful way by which to tackle tough subjects, and tough subjects should not be avoided.

This is an official portrait. I would have preferred if a hanging Hitler was colorized.

Still a lot of people have an emotional "binding" with this man. It's getting less by the years. On the other hand several groups are rising that use him as a flagship, openly or hidden.
I don't have an emotional binding with Stalin.

    George
