    Nandakumar, thank you! It is called that because it can mimic, and does, all other birds. It uses it to keep other birds from it's territory.

    Mimus polyglottos leucopatera = mimicking many songed white winged bird.

    My Zoo prof in college said that would be the only thing we remembered from his class. And he was RIGHT!

    I saw some new birds today while I was sitting at our deck but not one of them is a mockingbird...yet...and they bloody come when I don't have my camera with me. Bummer!
