What is the best technique for shooting lighting?

We've been having unusually violent storms here lately in the southern U.S. and I have the desire to capture myself a good frame of lighting. I don't have a very good landscape to capture it in, but I do want to get the skills and knowledge under my belt in case I get an opportunity when in the western part of Texas.

So with that said, if anyone has experience and input on the subject, I'm all ears.

    Thank you!

Use an intervalometer,Dave...it helps a lot when the storms passes to record the short span it comes through and you will get a hell of a lot of lightning than you can ever wish for...
