White and green ...on green and white...

Another, in a "painterly" background series. The idea being that a complex background can be as pleasing as the subject, without distracting from it; using DoF methodically and a carefully chosen, defocused background.

The flowers were about half a metre above me with the tree/bush canopy about 3-4 metres higher.

Over all it is pleasing; yet i might confess, the brilliance of background is a bit over pouring???....

Nicely captured, however the white flowers would be more pronounced if you had perhaps moved a step to the right; you would have more of the colorful background present rather than the white areas.

I agree....with both John and Nandakumar's comments. The flowers are very nice indeed but for the glaring background.

    Hello Boab
your intention is "only" seen, if you look at the picture enlarged. In the post version they do not stand out crisp sharp and the background is distracting, as others remarked. I would have cropped a little bit from the bottom to get "rid" of the too black leaves on the right. IMHO this would strengthen your intention to have focused objects on defocused background.

    Hi Erwin,

Aye yer correct, shouldha put "view large" in the text (and the wee rectangle with the arrow shows a larger image still). Ah looked at cropping out the almost black leaves but felt it left the photo too"cramped". Also intentionally chose the white areas tae show that white on white can work outside a studio.

Thanks tae all for the input.

I was inclined to agree about the background, but looking at full size I can see the flowers against the white background. There is a distinct dark edge effect to the petals which enhances the image. Was this done deliberately in PP or was it a side-effect? I think that it would probably benefit from a crop to leave just the two flower heads against the white background.

I agree with the thoughts above that the background's brightness tends to overwhelm, but I love the batik like effect of it and hope you can show us more examples of this concept.

    Hi John,

Ah could see the outlines in the viewfinder, whilst taking the photo; a side effect of using a distant background, in-camera settings and then minimal PP, edge sharpened (which delineated the flower edges even more), warmed up balance tae 6000k. Much like the original shots and data posted on the test of the Industar lens.
