I instantly preferred the 2nd one Mike then spent some time trying to decide why.
My conclusion was that the first looks like an image of the 'top of' a pile of corks whilst the second looks like 'a' pile of corks. I also find myself more interested in the writing on the corks.

The ideal of displaying the top of a pile vs. just a pile makes perfect sense to me, Grahame. I'm particularly glad that you enjoy the writing on the corks more in the second one, as that was one of my specific goals.
