    Bathing Beauties

I recently made a trip to Santa Clara Ranch in far south Texas. It is 300 native acres that the owners have turned into a wildlife photography destination. There are pit blinds that provide ground level views of small clearings with a watering hole. It's not my usual cup of tea but it definitely provides an easier and more comfortable method of getting low perspective shots without having to lay down in questionable environments under camouflage. I photographed at least 35 different species of animals and added at least 10 new birds to my catalog. If you are intested in seeing any more, you can view the trip report on my website at TerriBarnett.smugmug.com.

Wow, I was thinking the birds were very beautiful but the cottontail wins the prize from me! Such a unique shot. The painted bunting is also great as are the other birds. It helps that they were in a natural water environment rather than a bird bath.

    Re: Bathing Beauties

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Truth be told, I'd have been much prouder if I'd managed a good shot of the bird flying off. The Painted Bunting is actually cropped fairly heavily because I had backed off the focal length to leave enough room in frame for the exit but I never managed to catch that perfect moment. The rabbit is my favorite, even though technically it is not the best, but because it's just a fun, unique shot. One of my friends suggested the title "Dust Bunny".

Impressive stuff. I'm always in awe of you folks who nail these wildlife images so clearly. I can never seem to get myself into the position to be able to even get a decent capture. I tried last weekend and they were all a bit of a disaster.

I can relate to that Donald...I have more disasters that I can ever have many fingers and toes and some more...I am still trying...maybe it is my hard coconut (as my grandmother will say of me...) I can't just give up so easily and will always come back for more and of course, more failures...one of these days, I might win against my stubborn head. there is still hope...as long as I am still breathing...

Fabulous. How fortunate are you to have a place like that to go to and get shots like this. The water splashes really add to the bird images and the DoF with the big Tamron really make them stand out. Great shots.
