Dear Chauncey,
Although I like the colour version, I am also drawn to the b&w version because it reminds me of an old-fashioned print.
I think the version you suggest would be a cool-looking watercolour! I have another shot that I think would work well for that.

Dear Brian,
I shot this image on a cloudy day with diffuse sunlight. It acts like a big softbox! I actually shot more towards where the sun would be and manually exposed for the subject. This let my background fall to white.
You can do it!
