I like the speckled light but image needs a bit more of it, unfortunately you can't achieve that without a little landscaping work.
I'd try a bit of fill flash to add some body to the cactus.

And as the cactus is not in my yard but rather the yard of a rich and powerful man the landscaping will not happen.

What is 'fill flash'? If it is using the flash unit on the camera I could give it a try.
