They are both very nice, Alan, but I think I prefer the first. I like the colour contrast and the way the flower is framed by the leaves. I think I might be tempted to tame the highlights on the RH side as they are a bit distracting, but otherwise I think it is quite lovely. The square crop looks perfect. It may just be me, but in the second one, I feel the composition is a wee bit off; I would have liked to get all of that bottom petal.

I like both...that is an unfair question, which I like best. +1 to Janis' comment about the first flower. And I like the colour too. Orangy pink is my colour, just the softer version of sunrise or sunset...

I prefer the second image Alan mainly because I find the closer crop focuses more on the design of the flower itself, nature is a beautiful artist . I agree with Janis about the composition on the second image and tried a version myself and will post if you are interested in having a look.

Thanks all for the comments. This is another of my SOOC shots taken with my trusty little SD1000 ELPH which is a Goodwill rescue I got a few weeks ago. I couldn't cast a big enough shadow (at least I remembered not to shoot it in direct sunlight!) and that is why the hot spots at the edge of the first image. I tried cropping differently but it just didn't seem right. Tried rotating it too and that made my head swim.
Sure Greg, post away, no problem, I'd like to see it.

I like #1 because it is a very natural looking image with lovely colors. I like #2 because it works as an artistic image
