For example, can you use it for sunset or backlit shots or would it basically have no effect? Also, would you or have you used it in combination of shooting outdoor portraits where lets say you have REALLY nice clouds to compliment your subject. Will using this type of filter have any negative effects on your subject?
    Hi Chris,

I doubt using it shooting a sunset is going to give any advantage, as the darkening of sky effect is most pronounced at 90 degrees to the sun and minimal/zero facing towards or away from its axis. In fact with the sun in shot, the extra 4 filter surfaces are liable to contribute extra flare.

It does give better saturation of foliage, most likely because it is removing the sheen reflection of surface moisture/oils of the leaves.

This may be why it is inadvisable for portraiture; because it will do this on a curved surface (the face) in an uneven manner leading to peculiar shading/reflectance. I'd go with Colin's advice.

The only other downside will be the loss of 2 stops of light which will force a slower shutter speed and/or a wider aperture and/or a higher ISO.

    Cheers,

    Hi Colin,

Thank you for your response, sir. I had to kind of “read between the lines” to interpret it, but never let it be said that I can’t take a subtle hint! I consider the advice found on this site as pretty much Gospel.

I suspected as much as regards these circular type GND’s, but it never hurts to ask, I suppose.
