I doubt using it shooting a sunset is going to give any advantage, as the darkening of sky effect is most pronounced at 90 degrees to the sun and minimal/zero facing towards or away from its axis. In fact with the sun in shot, the extra 4 filter surfaces are liable to contribute extra flare.
It does give better saturation of foliage, most likely because it is removing the sheen reflection of surface moisture/oils of the leaves.
This may be why it is inadvisable for portraiture; because it will do this on a curved surface (the face) in an uneven manner leading to peculiar shading/reflectance. I'd go with Colin's advice.
The only other downside will be the loss of 2 stops of light which will force a slower shutter speed and/or a wider aperture and/or a higher ISO.
