A good friend of our eldest is about to graduate with a BA in Music. A part of the graduation, the University holds an exhibition day during which the graduates perform their own compositions and prospective media employers can assess the individual talent. Ultimately, Will wants to compose for film and television. We were invited. I assumed a nice bright concert hall but arrived to find we were in a darkened studio with coloured lighting. I was shooting at ISO 3200 and -2.67 compensation so I make no claims for absolute quality. The auto white balance coped quite well and so with a fair amount of PP the colour original wasn't too bad but I quite liked this version.

At least you were able to use a fast enough shutter speed; although some hand blur would've been acceptable.

Nice image, given the difficult shooting conditions. The lighting on the hands (while obvious for a recital), certainly draws your attention them and the keyboard. The lighting separates Will from the background quite nicely too. There is just enough of the piano visible to balance out the image.

Nice details. The folds in the curtain are a nice touch. If you could refine it to display separation between his lower back and the background, that would make it even better.

Very nice shot, John...and I like the conversion to B/W. Does the original looks horrible in colour? Just curious...

I think that works very well. My only comment, which is really nitpicking, is that the black keys don't appear black.

Thanks all for the comments. As you might imagine, a lot of PP was needed. In particular, the highlights had to be brought under control especially the hands and arms. Izzie, the original RAW was pretty bad but using a combination of the Adobe RAW converter and the resulting TIF in CS6 produced an acceptable image but I liked this in mono. Will is joining us for our evening meal today and I will be letting him have copies of the colour image in which I have implemented Mike's suggestion for the lower back area (see below).
