A few bugs in the garden

Mindful of David's comment that long threads with a lot of images don't work for people like him who have poor internet connections (as I too will in another month), I decided not to add to Geoff's bug thread but instead to go back to separate threads.

These are from our garden today. None where quite what I wanted, but they were the best of the bunch. All single shot, 100mm macro plus 36mm extension tube. C&C welcome, as always.

A very small hoverfly on a peony yet to open:

One view of what I think might be a firefly on a marigold:

Another view of the same critter:

A fairly large ant in the same peonies. I find these extremely tough to photograph. They rarely stay parallel to the sensor, so DOF is a problem. The shiny carapace reflects even diffused light. The black body blends into the dark background where there is nothing for the flash to reflect from.

Thanks, all. We finally have a lot of bugs back in the yard. After the hard winter, they were slow to return.
