I'm getting lazy...
I did not want to carry a full size DSLR and a lens or two to a Memorial Day ceremony today. I decided that I needed a small bridge camera. I didn't want to spend too much on the camera which will be used only infrequently. However, there are several specific reasons for a small but, capable camera. My wife always wants me to bring a camera to family events and there are times, like today, that I would just like a small camera to carry places.
My drop dead requirements for a camera were eye level viewfinder (EVF O.K.) and RAW capability. Important, but not a deal breaker was HSS capability (preferably with one of my Canon hotshoe flashes).
My son-in-law carried an SX50 HS on an African Safari and his dad carried one also. I was impressed with the imagery from my son-in-law's little camera (and he shot JPEG in full auto mode). I was even more impressed with his dad's photography (also shot in JPEG full-auto)...
I decided today, that I needed (wanted?) a small bridge camera like their SX50 HS and since Canon had one refurbished for $179 USD on their Canon USA Store, I purchased one. The shipping and state tax brought the total up to $199 USD. Heck, I have spent more on a filter than this camera cost and I really like purchasing refurbished cameras.
I plan on matching this little camera with my equally small Canon 270EXii flash which will provide bounce and HSS capability. Since I already own this little flash and combine it with a Joe Demb Photojournalist Flip-It, there is no extra expense.
I also have a selection of 67 mm filters for my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens which can be used (via an adapter) on the SX50 HS.
Sure, there are many things lacking in this little camera, slow apertures being at the forefront of those things. But, I have a pair of very capable Canon 7D cameras with a selection of top-line glass. The SX50 HS is just meant to augment my DSLR capability at a relatively low price. Another problem, inherent with many cameras of this type is the long shutter lag. I know that a .41 to .48 second shutter lag will drive me crazy but, I can always use my DSLR kit for the times when I cannot abide the slow lag time.
BTW: I also just bought a filter adapter and a lens hood on eBay for a total of about $7 USD including shipping...

Re: I'm getting lazy...
Must agree with you - a small camera, in good light, can give good images. Just think of the greats who shot using a 35mm lens on a leica rangefinder. I did, and now carry a cheap Canon M with 22mm lens, shoots raw, is small and compact, and when I wish I can use it with EFS and EF lenses, especially the light 10-18mm IS EFS. Even my trusty G10 gets less use with the M in my pocket.
