    A Morning for Yellow Flowers

A wild Iris hosting yesterday's rain, representing today's sunshine. I was out early to photograph birds when I stumbled upon a stand of wild yellow Irises in the marsh reeds. I don't have a macro lens nor have I delved into this realm of photography so this close up was done using my kit lens EFS 18-55 mm and I got as close as possible with the ability to focus. In hindsight I should have played more with various exposures / DOFs but I was getting eaten alive by the mosquitoes! C&C appreciated.

Yellow Iris is a very tricky subject; in fact any Iris is fraught with difficulties.

You have managed to avoid any over exposure areas which is a common problem with this sort of scene.

But, more depth of focus would have looked better; however, you also need to keep the background well blurred so this is bound to be a compromise. And ideally, if possible, pick a perfect bloom next time not one which is half eaten. Possibly this was the only one available?

Having water drops on flowers is a matter of personal preference. I avoid it while some others will spray water on to petals before shooting.

Thanks Geoff - this was the best flower I could find. There were a few others but they looked more beat up by the heavy rain we had yesterday. I'm looking forward to some other flower photography opportunities in the future so I will work on the depth of focus issue to try to bring more of the flower into focus while still maintaining bokeh. I wanted to include the water droplet because it captures the transition from rain to sunshine that we have experienced here over the past 24 hrs. Thanks again for your close review and observations. Stu

Very nicely done, Stu..I have Irises in my garden but they are not the wild kind. This one here opened their petals for show. I have to try to bend mine and it will not cooperate. Mosquitoes are around so much nowadays in this wet and wild weather condition but for this shot, it is well worth it...You did very well...

Thanks Izzie, I just love the colours so I'm happy, under the conditions, with what I achieved.
