    You would think, so simple!

I got these beautiful shiitake mushrooms from my community supported agriculture share and I thought I would try photographing them before I ate them all... You would think, so simple!

During my initial shooting, I found that I had some questions and turned to my mentor, Kodiak. I really wanted to show the beautiful structure of the inside of the mushroom, as well as the lovely sepia texture of the mushroom itself but was missing the mark.

This, however, was the final result, using my translum and daylight only.

    You would think, so simple!

C&C is welcome, but please do not ask me to re-shoot. The mushrooms are gone.

You can always accentuate textures with flash, even on camera; you can practice on a slice of bread as the mushrooms are probably simmering in a pot by now.

You can do it with natural light alone; as you've shown here, the flash is just something to consider. Nicely captured.

I like the way you have captured the structure of the mushroom and showed its face as well. I also like the idea of using natural light only, especially as I am trying to resist the temptation to gather large quantities of paraphernalia.

    Dear John,

Thank you for your suggestions! To be truthful, though, I did try flash and combinations thereof, but was not taken by the results.

I did forget to post my exif, however.

    Dear Tony,

    I love natural light!

I understand working on a budget.

I do have some key ingredients, though. My translum was a gift from a fellow CiC member. I purchased my softboxes from Kodiak and some light stands and a boom from B&H. I also have a very long flash cord. This equipment has been the backbone of almost all of my studio shooting.

Just another method to consider, as Kodiak is a fan of focus stacking; that is another method to try.

Re: You would think, so simple!

    Dear Donald,

When I opened my bag and saw these mushrooms, I was struck with how beautifully simple, yet complex they were. I especially loved the color and texture. I knew I wanted to photograph just two, to show both sides. No plate.

What I had trouble with was getting the right settings to properly display the inner gills and the outer shell. A classic problem of working with the quality of light.

    Thank you for commenting!

Funds are still very limited and at this point I do not have these resources. Learning how to do it is on my bucket list, though.

    Dear Izzie,

I was thinking of you especially when I took this shot.

I know how much cooking and the quality of the food we eat are a part of our lives.
