I agree, Troy, the first shot is exceptional: very creative. The second tells a wonderful story, really shows the moment. It's a pity it's a trifle out of focus, or was it a cellphone camera shot? If so, it's pretty impressive.

The second shot isn't out of focus....it's just ripped off of facebook and uploaded to tinypic. As a matter of fact, this is a photo of the same person holding the same camera (LINK).
Well, thanks everybody for the words of encouragement. To answer your question Hans, the ground and building behind the camera was all white/off-white, acting like a large diffuse reflector. The rest was manual tone mapping. In retrospect, I should have increased the shutter speed from 1/200 to 1/400 or so. I figured the motion blur would be artistic, and maybe it is, but i would rather see motion stopped.
I just woke up from an all-night party following our graduation ceremony, so I couldn't quite get around to this thread lately

I think you nailed the shutter speed. If completely frozen I think it would loose something. But just my opinion
