They always say having children can be rewarding, and now I have proof. My wife got me a Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro lens for Father's Day. Woo-hoo! It focuses like lightning, and the IS works great. My 17-55 (not L-series) is also IS USM, and f/2.8 throughout its range, but I think the new lens focuses quicker, maybe because it's a prime, or because they put better USM in the L-series. Or maybe I'm just in love with the new toy.
Of course, I can hardly find a single bug today. Just one shot of some kind of beetle so far. This is f/3.5, 1/1500, ISO 400. I messed up the settings: I had ISO 400 and Av to let me close the aperture for macro, but then opened the aperture because I saw a bird, and forgot to close it.
I also took a couple of portraitish shots of garden statues, and I think it's going to be fantastic for that.
Cheers,
Rick
