My 2015 Weekly Photos - Part 3

Week 37 - Cliff Path Scenes

The wind moderated a little and with sunny spells so I nipped out for a quick walk along a cliff top path which is close to where I live.

Looking South. Very much a try it and see gamble with that light angle. Took several shots with different settings and moved around slightly to try alternative but similar angles. Most, as expected, were failures and this one required a bit of tweaking.



7D with Canon 70-200 lens. 1/500 F11 Iso 200 at 70 mm. Edited as two Raw conversions, to keep some detail in the clouds, final sharpen on a duplicate layer with a mask to prevent the sea from appearing over sharpened.

Didn't find much else in the landscape department to enthuse me (lack of foreground interest) so I turned my camera on some of the walkers instead; for a bit of 'rural street photography'.

The clouds in the first shot needs a bit of tweaking, as you said...it would be nice to be able to see that as well...
I like #2 but the clouds there seems to be a bit muddy? Otherwise, the texture of the surrounds is really good here.
#3 is a nice scene, but a bit more on the cloud emphasis department could have been nice too.
#4 is my favourite because of the dog who noticed you...the girl couldn't care much at all but a nicer composition there...nothing posed at all. Yes, I prefer this one better...not that the others are not sharp, but it is just my "like" style at times...

P.S. I might be wrong on #1 and #2..maybe these are better without the cloud emphasis, I do not know...but without the expanded feature of lytebox, it is really hard to tell...

It was one of those UK autumn days with rather subdued colour and a bit of haze in the distance so the clouds in particular were rather pastel in colour and saturation. As such I was reluctant to risk over doing my edits.

Here is the first image again with more contrast added.



Is that too much? This is how it looked as shot.

Geoff, my preference is for your original edit in the first post of this photo: more detail is visible in the dark almost offshore rock.

I grew up a few minutes from a somewhat similar shoreline. These sort of photos are more difficult than they look because of the shimmering light on the ocean.

I am with Bruce, I like the first edit better, more subtler clouds and more pronounced but thanks for indulging my whim. I like the sheen of the water too in the original...

Hi Geoff. Sorry I have not been around for a while and so have missed a few posts. I like these but agree they are more difficult than they look. Getting passers by in the right position in a photo is tricky if you don't want them to be the subject of the photo. I think you have achieved this in three, but in 2 they are too dominant. Of course, in the 4th, she is your subject, but I do wonder whether a portrait orientation may work better ?

I wanted to show something of the surroundings in #4, Kaye; but maybe a square crop? I suspect 4 x 5 ratio would seem too 'cramped' ?

Probably no other options for #2. A different lens would have allowed me to go wider. Although I did crop a little off the left side and top. I can try replacing that but I think it probably needs more at the bottom and the available camera angle didn't allow for that option.

ps. Today I tried some more shots of people in seascapes so if any are worth keeping I will post them in next week's offerings.

I look forward to seeing them. I spent a few days in Venice whilst away and as I catch up will post a few of those which are my attempts to get people in the photos, so will be interested in your thoughts then.

Tried to get some more shots of people in a seascape scene. Posing for the obligatory photograph (never mind the risks).

Geoff, I love the first one in particular. Your two RAW conversions worked well. The rocks have good detail, as does the water.

I like both of the first one...even without the obligatory people in the shot, the scenery is really peaceful...just imagining only the sound of the surf without anything else...I've missed those...I like #3 too btw...

Week 39 - Jay Feather. Found this feather lying on a rock and liked the difference in textures so I tried a few shots; but it has taken me two weeks to get around to editing the image.



7D with Sigma 180 macro lens (because I couldn't be bothered to change lenses for a single quick shot) 1/200 F14 Iso 200.
