    Serengeti/Ngorongoro II: the small 5

    Hi
We were not only "hunting" the big 5, but also concentrated on smaller species (size does not always matter); so here are my quick-rendered small 5:

#1: Kirk's DikDik, one of the smallest antilopes in East Africa
    Serengeti/Ngorongoro II: the small 5

#2: Blue-capped Cordon-bleu (regarding names of birds I am always speechless)
    Serengeti/Ngorongoro II: the small 5

    #3: Lilac-breasted Roller
    Serengeti/Ngorongoro II: the small 5

    #4: Rufous-naped Lark
    Serengeti/Ngorongoro II: the small 5

    #5: Amethyst Sunbird
    Serengeti/Ngorongoro II: the small 5

I hope you enjoy also the small 5; C&C always welcome.
    Erwin

Yeyyy...I am first to comment here. These are all pretty shots, Erwin. The birds are very colourful. I cannot chose which ones I like best there but the lark comes close for the pose and composition even if it is not colourful as the rest of them. Very funny...s/he looks like having a bad hair day. If it is a girl, I would have panicked showing that kind of hair in public... Anyway, I like #1 too but it needs a bit of brightening by the part of the face/eyes...looks like the animal was moving that was why your focus went to the body instead...just my thoughts...

I am having trouble getting the photos on this post (and some others) to appear on this site this morning. Is anyone else having this difficulty. I was attempting to choose which photos to vote for on one of the mini-competitions, also, and some of the photos did not appear. Anyone else noticing this today?

Beautiful birds and a very cute Dik-Dik, thanks for sharing . I googled 'Dik-Dik' and I found out that they are as big as large dogs , so tiny

Yes. the Gremlins are at it again. I tried to upload an edit to one of the posts and it showed me a No Pic image but there was a link. I did it twice and finally I decided to copy the link and the edit appeared. Go figure.

David, Grahame, Binnur, Jim, John, Izzie, Doug thank you for looking and commenting.
@Binnur: greatness is relative; at a shoulder hight of 40cm I would not consider it a big dog
@Izzie: I was very much surprised to see the dikdik on a kopje (they usually are more hidden in the bushes), so I trembled a bit and the larch: if they get excited, they "push" their feathers up - and they are most of the time excited. More: you would probably need a much steadier twig to sit on and belt out your song

That's a lovely set of images. So nice to share your experience. The Amethyst Sunbird has got to be my favourite though.

    Thank you John and Barbara
@Barbara: I will try to convince some of them to fly to Texas, when I will be there again
