National Geographic Quality images! Perhaps a bit of dodging or selective brightening might benefit the bird's face in image #2 in which the face is in the shadow of the wing...

Mostly luck I must admit. Light was perfect and the bird came directly towards me and grabbed the fish only a few meters directly in front of the kayak.

What a great set and if going out in a canoe armed to the teeth with a 500mm is luck, I'm never going to be that lucky. What I love in particular is the fact that the bird never took it's eyes off you. Remarkable.
