Okay Barbara, now you are just showing off
Okay Barbara, now you are just showing off
Geoff, John and Barbera, haven't checked this thread for a couple of days. Wonderful images all of you. Cant wait for the weather to warm up here so our beasties start coming out of hibernation
Nice shots Geoff and John, love moths but not been very successful with them to date, think its the overall softness of them hampers my focusing
Great shots Barbara, and not on a macro lens - very well done indeed, not only technically good but esthetically pleasing as well
No need for envy Izzie The bugs were abundant in west Texas it was almost impossible not to shoot them. My son thought I was crazy but then again it does not take much to make him wonder about his dear old mom. I am not hooked on bugs just yet, but may try to keep them in mind when out shooting.

Thank you Mark!
Moths do require slightly different treatment, Mark.
Flash often produces problems from those reflective scales but they are often static subjects so you can use much longer exposures, on a tripod, and they are easier than many other subjects for focus stacking.
In a lot of cases, I do 'cheat' with moths. They come to a light placed near a window where I scoop them up and store in collection tubes inside my fridge. It's OK for me; one of the advantages of being single.
Then the next day I simply tip out each moth in turn onto suitable backgrounds, such as bark or leaves etc. If you get the background correct they will happily sit there all day. In fact I often find it is a struggle to get them to fly away and make room for the next model.
I use a base container of a small shallow box so it can easily be turned and tipped to produce the best angles. Lighting is provided by a couple of 'studio lamps' with daylight quality bulbs. Just a couple of desk lamps will suffice.
Very nice images David, 1 to 3 are Hoverflies, cant tell you which type but they are
Getting hard to keep up with all the great shots, well done all.
Next time Myra asks if there is anything she can pick up in town for me I just might say 'a really good macro lens. Beautiful shots.
Cheers Mark, I knew they were Hovers, also known as Drone-Bee mimic Fly's?
Thanks B, appreciated bud
David EXCELLENT shots!!!!
Your talent is no longer hidden, David -- everyone knows how good you are at these kind of insects you show off!
Thank you Barbara
Cheers Izzie, I'm just lucky but thank you very much, your fee is in the post!
Another set of stunning shots David, #3 is amazing. I went out bug hunting today, I found one it was dead
Spring can't come soon enough.
