    Rockport at Golden Hour

We spent a few hours in Rockport MA and of course the trusty camera was along. The sun was setting just after dinner, so the pictures I took were all taken at or during the "golden hour" period.

I have mixed feelings about the small towns that we visited outside of Boston. They seem to be heading down the into the "lowest common denominator" tourism, so far as I can tell. With kitsch and tackiness replacing their former existence. Rockport (aptly named as it what where granite that quarried in the area was shipped out from there) appears to have been both a fishing village and a place with large and small vacation homes. The vacation business seems to be winning as the pleasure boats in the harbour seem to outnumber the fishing boats.

    2. Motif Number 1 (fishing shed). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motif_Number_1 This seems to be the town icon the everyone paints and / or photographs, so I thought I should too.

That is my favourite too, Doug...but I would like a little bit more explanation and separate shot, if you have it, of that wall with the hanging objects there...I am not a fisherman ... I just watched them when I was young and never allowed to talk to them at all...

Hi Izzie, this is Manfred's picture. He allowed me to post something that to me was the was the quintessential New England fishing shack. He may have others to show.

It's a nice shot, Doug. I find that the balance is off a bit as between the shack and the reflection in the water, the balance is too far to the right. I took some similar shots (probably standing pretty well where you did), but didn't like them as much as the image I posted for that reason.

Izzie - they are old wooden floats which identifies where the lines to the lobster pots or nets are located, so the fishermen can find and retrieve them and the catch that they are holding. I expect the colours identify the specific owners. Image 3 shows the more modern version.

Here is a closeup of them.

I like the way you have managed to capture the busy scenes effectively.

Nice images and interesting with it Manfred. I know what you mean about these quaint old coastal villages and towns. We are planning a trip to visit the areas New Brunswick and Nova Scotia early next year but I suspect our long held mental image of these areas will come up against the same problem. But there again, as "tourists", I guess we will be part of the problem.

I haven't been to too many coastal towns in New Brunswick, but both Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Nova Scotia meet that description, as tourism replaces fishing as the primary source of income in many of these places. That being said, both the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove and the brightly coloured old town part of Lunenburg are definitely photogenic.

Yes and with it sitting on a tripod for the first two shots and definitely not HDR. All four are single images, full-frame. low ISO shots.

Yes it is a pleasure to use a camera with such a good dynamic range. You could give it the HDR look if you really concentrate.... Mind you it would not look nearly as good.
