This is a very simple image. When I saw the Bunker Hill Monument in the Charlestown area of Boston, against the bright blue afternoon sky, I knew I wanted an image that really was nothing more than the lines of the monument against the sky. The outcome, really just a series of lines that made up triangles at first glance, but something a bit more complex when one took a closer look.

While it might sound strange, I ended up taking quite a few pictures until I got the geometry just the way I wanted it to be.

I like it. The angles work well.

There are two images there Manfred, one is the monument itself cutting into the sky with sharp lines and angles then if you view the monument as negative space the brilliant blue of the sky which makes the image look almost like abstract art.
    I like it very much

Thanks Greg. You figured out exactly what I was attempting to do.

When trying something like this, I will take the image and rotate it in post to see how it looks in a different orientation, and if it works (without me looking to closely at it), I know I've nailed it. In this case, I want someone who sees the print at a distance to wonder about the image and step closer to examine it in detail.

    Well done.

I hope people don't stare at you as much as they seem to stare at me when I wander around taking multiple shots at slightly different angles etc.

Only when I am lying on my back when I shoot up. My wife wanders away, pretending not to know me and the bystanders are wondering if they should call for an ambulance...

On the other hand I was doing exactly that in one of Canada's National Parks, when a man and camera came up to me and asked what I was doing. I explained this to him and his comment as he walked away was; "with all that equipment I would have thought you should be able to do it with a single shot". I wonder what he would have thought of Ansel Adam's style of working?

I'm sure you have accomplished your goal.

If this was mine, I would use a monochrome version that renders the sky in the desired tones.

I thought you might suggest that, but it doesn't work particularly well in monochrome; it seems to lose too much.

Very beautiful and powerful picture. Well done.

Would it be incorrect to remove the diagonal line or crack about a third of the way up or leave "as is?"

As the photographer one can do anything one wants. These are not cracks but natural striations in the stones.

It appears to be so, but the fact that it is is indicative of the complexity and creativity involved in its creation.
