I do like the crops, but I think you may have cropped too close to the bottom on the first one.

Cropping looks better to me. Some people insist on working strictly to the rule of thirds with all images and it can look good when you have the right sort of background, but for me, real life doesn't comply with strict composition rules so I always prefer to work with what is available; as you have done with these edits.
