In Lisbon we visited the Geronimos Monastery named after St. Gerome (nothing to do with the Chiricahua Apache Indian chief). It originally housed monks of the order of St Gerome tasked with pursuing the well being of sailors and of the "King's Soul". Its now a world heritage sight and tourist destination, known for its architecture and the fact that it is the last resting place of Vasco de Gama. The exterior is limestone as you can see from the first image but the interior is sandstone. If I'm honest, the architectural style is a bit fussy for my taste but that didn't stop me appreciating the jaw dropping quality of the interior stonework. I tried to do it some justice with the images that follow. Definitely worth a visit if you are ever in the city.
1. The Monastery and the Adjacent Gardens
2. Holy Souls Once Trod Here - Five image Panorama
3. The Quad
4. Some of the Cells on the Upper Level
5. One of the archways onto the Quad
6. Part of the Upper Level
7. One of the Windows in the Lower Level
8. The Monastery Church which is still in use. It looked like visitors to it were only admitted in small numbers. Consequently the queue to get in disappeared around the corner of the building. This was taken from an overlooking level.
