    Formula 1

I had the opportunity to go to and photograph the Canadian Gran Prix in Montreal last month. My first time to such an event, and thoroughly enjoyed the time spent there.

I was also able to walk along the pits before the races.

I've been to the F1 event in Montreal a couple of times, fabulous venue. I'm impressed with the access you must have had for the garage shots and the steering wheel! Nice captures.

Well taken. Used to be a fan of the Indy circuit in the old days.

I saw these shots yesterday but I was called elsewhere but now I saw this one again, I still think you should had lowered your shutter speed to show movement in the wheels at least...#1, #2 and #5 could benefit from it...but if your purpose was to show how the car looks like, frozen in time, then you were successful in doing so...

Yup, I'm with Izzie on this one. I've shot at a few Grand Prix and it's probably best to use shutter priority and firstly aim for a fast shutter speed while panning, slowly reducing your shutter speed during the race. This will mean that you have some sharp keepers to start and then hopefully over time will have some keepers with slower shutter speeds (though probably not quite such a 'hit' ratio) later on for a more dynamic final image.

Quite possibly the best website for some motivation (a massive history of photographing F1 and one of the first to popularise the 'zoom' technique) is http://www.schlegelmilch.com/products.htm - check out his shot of Stefan Johansson in Monaco 1985 - can't get much more dynamic than that...

Thank you for the comments/feedback. I can understand the desire for a bit of wheel blur to impart a sense of speed, and a slower shutter speed would have done that in conjunction with some panning. I did not have sufficient room to pan the lens, so I settled for the faster shutter speed. Maybe I'll get invited next year, and I can use the experience I gained from this opportunity.

The blurring of the wheels can also be done in post John depending what you are using with a radial blur or equivalent. I added just a touch to the wheels of the truck in this shot. Since it was traveling no where near the speeds your Formulas are I just added a touch. I must add however, that the motion streaks were done in-camera.

Nice shots too John. I was gonna get me one of those baby's but I couldn't find any kayak racks that would fit on top!

I also would say the shutterspeed is to fast. I've never done such a thing, so I can't say more.

Maybe a little off topic. At this moment there is a Dutch Formula 1 coureur of only 17 years at this moment. To young for a driving licence in Holland. His name is Mark Verstappen.
