    Duxford - Flying Legends 2015

Just a quick note to see if anyone on the forum is attending over the coming weekend. For those who don't know, the Flying Legends airshow is 1940's inspired, with lots of single aircraft and formation flying of WWII piston engined aircraft - below is a link to what's flying this year:

Oh yeah! My grandfather built Spitfires in Southampton in the war and there are a few which he may have had a hand in. My father was an engineer on the last Spit in the RAF as well so there's a family connection - with 10-11 of them flying it should be good.

I was going to hire a super-tele prime which would have been fantastic for single aircraft flying, but there are going to be lots of formations in the air so I've gone for the Sigma 150-600 S instead - a little slower and not as good iq, but a lot more versatile for the big wings. Can't wait - lots of Merlins and those pesky Packard licensed engined Mustangs in the air...

Sigma should do the job nicely Phil. I have the 150-500, haven't used it on planes but get some nice results at my nephews kart racing events and sons soccer.
    You enjoy yourself

Phil just a note, I was reading some info from a photographer that shoots planes, try to shot slow enough to blur the props, and they show up best facing into the sun. Good luck and look forward to the pictures.

    Cheers: Allan

I've shot props before - unfortunately the public viewing areas are south facing but I have my preferred spots sorted out for shooting

Go early...tell you the truth, I have not really shot an airshow with more than my zoom 300mm at the longest end because the 150-500mm is just too big to get the formation quickly and it happens so quick. My assistant (hubby) who used to be involved in racing them is my "barker". He barks the order to "SHOOT!" With an 18-200mm the trick is to follow 'a' lead plane and when they bank, you got the greatest shot of all...or when they split. There are a lot more possibility. My shot with my 150-500mm was an accident shot. I like it but I wasn't able to get the formation for the the Missing Man (respect for those who died flying), but will not use it again because you will be sure to miss a lot from the formation. Just a tip you might appreciate as I shoot airplanes and airshows (a few statics on display) from summer to end of autumn for over 10 years now. I have not seen the Canadian Snowbirds yet so it is in my bucket list. The Red Bull Races in Texas on September will be fun to go to...
