    Two Sticks

This is the Falls of Acharn near Kenmore on Loch Tay Scotland.
Taken from a narrow wooden footbridge which crosses the stream. A difficult spot to compose from just setting up the tripod was tricky. Still nobody said it was going to be easy. I was under strict instructions not to climb over the side of the bridge by you know who!

Exif: 5D3, 24-105L, ISO100,f16, 4 sec screw in ND used a three stop from memory.

Nice colors and composition! My only issue, though it's significant, is that the lowest part of the waterfall should be vertical, not tilted. If you straighten it, you'll lose a lot on the right side. Hopefully you've got more room over there.

Nice looking waterfall. Reminds me of a place close to where I live called Old Man's Cave.

Mike thanks for taking time to look and comment, sadly I don't have any real estate to the RHS. The wooden footbridge I was shooting from would have come in to the frame had I widened the view. I have looked back at the raw image WRT the level of the fall you mentioned and the lens correction feature in LR (either Level, full or auto) change the level of that fall. Thanks again your comments are appreciated.

    Re: Two Sticks

Well today I finally found time to rework the original image to make the waterfall vertical. However as I didn't have any additional data to the left to allow for the vertical shift I had to resort to some quick and dirty clone techniques. Which resulted in this rendition.

What do you think of this version

The flow of the water is better in the second one but IMHO, the cloning doesn't work.
You might have done better using the liquify tool to "pull the rocks to the edge" or making a
selection and using Content Aware Scaling to increase the size.

FWIW, I liked the first exposure more better...going down to the sticks and shooting up might
    have been an interesting perspective.

Bill thanks for looking and commenting. I've not tried the liquify tool or content aware scaling, thanks for the pointersI shall revisit this one with your comments in mind thanks again.

Bill thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated. Your comment made me consider what I could do with the image given my lack of knowledge regarding the liquify tool.
First of all I looked at my copy of Martin Evenings great book Photoshop for photographers, bookmarked the relevant section for a wet day read and practice. As this wasn't a tool I had used previously. Then I opened the image in CS5, to use a procedure that I had tried before :-

I added some canvas to the top and bottom, made a selection along the top edge of the image and used the transform tool on the selection to stretch the selection sufficiently to allow me to crop later. I repeated this at the right hand side.
I then added a vertical guide placed adjacent to the main waterfall to allow me to rotate the image to make the waterfall vertical. This then allowed me to produce a crop on the image such that I had a similar view to the first edit. I have to say that this did produce a much more effective edit than my rather rough and ready cloning.
Thank you again for making me think about the potential ways available to edit the image.

    Re: Two Sticks

Peter, Here's another way. I once again took the liberty of loading your image into CS6 and did some tinkering about to end up with this which 'corrects' the waterfall angle without losing any of the image area. (Also tweaked the colour balance to my own liking but left the luminosity as it was in your original as I like the darkness of it.)

    Two Sticks

So these are the steps in CS6.

Adjusted colour balance (Image/Adjustments/ Color Balance:-
    Two Sticks

Altered the shapes in the image using Warp. Note that you must select the entire image first (Select/All) to enable Warp:-
    Two Sticks

The image will now have horizontal and vertical lines across it as follows:-
    Two Sticks

Drag the lines as required to warp the contents of your image as required and when finished click on the check box at the centre top of the screen:-
    Two Sticks

Dont forget to de-select the image (Select/De-select).

I use this sometimes to correct wonky horizons without losing any image area.

    Hope this helps.

Neville thank you so much for taking time to document the method you have used. I will copy them and give both this and you other tips on my Saltwick Bay image. Thanks again.

    Re: Two Sticks

My pleasure Peter. I find Warp really useful for redemption of those 'if only' mistakes you discover later on your monitor. I'm sure some purists would be uncomfortably about the ethics of altering shapes within an image but we do it all the time. Tilt and shift lenses for example distort shapes but nobody has declared them unethical.
I omitted to mention I really like the waterfall image.
