A Gym with all the lights on
Some of you might know that I have been complaining for years, that gyms or sports halls don't always use all the lights in the venue, particularly for school based competitions.
Well I can finally say I wasn't making it up & I have recently been to an event where there was lots of lighting, oodles & oooodles of it, or perhaps that should be lumens & lumens?
Anyway you know what I mean.
Often I use the 85mm, so I can get a 1.8 aperture & have an ISO of 2000 or more & svn that only gets me 1/250th of a second sometimes when Im doing Basketball games.
This venue was a Basketball stadium, but it was for a Cheerleading & Dance competition event & the difference was amazing, I could use f/4 a time of between 1/550 and 1/800 and ISO of 1250-1600, suffice to say I was very happy!
The group I work for, booked me in as a 'Coach' so I could go onto the performance floor with them, but I was off to the side, rather then front & centre. Still it was great fun.

How beautiful all these shots are, Kay. All actions...I like the first one very much. She is a pretty girl...In the second one, what caught my attention is the girl on the left who looked scared. Funny really...my favourite is #5...

Nice captures in this series, yes lighting makes the difference in these types of shots.

Good to see some of your 'in-the-arena' images again Kay. Interesting what you say about how all available lighting is sometimes not used. I wonder who influences who in these matters?

Re: A Gym with all the lights on
Nice shots. Amazing the difference between full lighting and reduced lighting.
I would expect that reducing the lighting in any public building (schools included) is an effort to reduce the power consumption and associated costs.
Too bad that governmental agencies don't go solar like I have. The power I produce by solar goes into the general power grid and I draw power from that grid. I actually produce more power than I use and every year, the power company will settle up and pay me for the difference between what I used and what I produced.
Another VERY IMPORTANT (for me) aspect of my particular solar setup is that if the general power grid goes down for some reason; I can disconnect my house from the grid and have two 1,500 Watt AC receptacles that I can plug into and use the power I am generating through my solar system.
Obviously, I will only be able to draw power directly from my solar system while the sun is shining (there are no batteries involved) but, the most likely time for the local power grid to go down is on very hot and very sunny days when the power usage (mainly from people using air conditioners) overwhelms the grid.
However, if I plug in my refrigerator and freezer to my power source during the day when my solar is generating and if I don't open the fridge or freezer after dark, my food should not spoil. Additionally I will be able to recharge batteries for cell phones and flashlights as well as playing my radio or TV for updates on the power loss.

Great action shots Kay, of some very colourful little girls.
I can relate to your issue with lack of light in kid's Basketball venues !
