    Morning Mist on the Plains

I was heading back from my sunrise shoot at the lake the other day and came across some mist on the plains. I've gone for subtle tones by de-saturating the colours judiciously. I wondered what people thought of this look. Your comments welcome as always.

Pls click on the image for best viewing.

Looks much better if you isolate the mist and trees, lose most of the foreground. Nice capture.

Really really nice, balance of the lines of subject matter, I agree the subtle processing shows the composition to great effect.

Dave don't torture me. We were due to fly to Australia at the beginning of August but have had to postpone until next year.

Great shot - not your fault I can not come over to get my own. In the meantime just keep them coming so I do not lose interest.

Wonderful mood! I'm surprised you were able to retain so much detail in the trees despite the mist. Consider a simpler composition that eliminates the water.

Re: Morning Mist on the Plains

Thanks for your comments John, Kay, LPaul and Mike. I have been fiddling with the composition of this shot on and off for the last few days but have had trouble deciding on which way to go. I tried cropping off more of the water at the bottom and also tried cropping off all of the water. But the latter composition looked a bit out of balance to me, with the main areas of interest too close to the bottom of frame. I'll play around some more, maybe even clone some land in place of some water

Sorry that your trip has been delayed LPaul, these things can be very dis-appointing.

Hi Dave I like the image and I would crop the water to put the emphasis more on the mist and the land.

Nice image Dave. Loads of atmosphere. Agree about the crop though. A small amount lends weight to the base but IMHO you could loose about two thirds of it.

Dave, I like the mood of this shot. Perhaps as you play with crops you could go to a 1 x 3 ratio and get rid of the water completely. Just a thought.

Thanks John and Chuck. Here are a couple of new versions, the first is just a crop off the bottom and the second with no water (some cloning used to extend the land a bit, amazing what you can do with modern farming techniques).

Chuck, despite my suggestion, I prefer the waterless version. Enhances the moodiness of the mist somehow.

Definitely the version with no water for me.

They are two different photographs. At full size I still prefer your first version. I like the mist on the pond.

...these crops are more stronger....I still think you shot this in the wrong angle though...but I like #1 too for the overview of what you just edited...Queensland -- beautiful one day, flooded the next. (Hmmm....does that sound like a Melbournian talking???

This is a good mood but the crop is difficult. I like the crops without the water but I would also consider also cropping off nearly half the right hand side (after cropping off most but not all the water) leaving a good view of the mountain (Flinders Peak ??).

I'll go for the crop without the water here Dave, it's all about the mist, ah, then I like the reflections in the water in the first

Thanks everybody for your additional comments, It's great to hear the differing views.

Yes Tony it would be Flinders Peak.

Izzie I can't criticize Melbournians anymore, they're in the family !

I definitely go for the first version, with the water. Are they strings of mist over the water, or are they reflections of clouds? The mystery makes the image for me.

Thanks John, I think they are cloud reflections.
