Hello Brian, gonna get technical again, but hopefully to be of help.
A utility I have shows that many of the petal colors in your image are color-clipped *** with the green channel forced down to zero. That ain't natural. This is occurring in the darker parts of the petals. To be honest, the image looks good enough as it is but, if you're seeking perfection, a bit more upward luminosity curve in those areas might fix it. Or, you could reduce the saturation just a little bit - which might itself add more of a gentle aspect.
*** I do not mean blown. In this context, I am referring to out-of-gamut colors. When we see channels at zero in this type of shot, zero indicates over-saturation somewhere. It can happen, for example to folks who always edit in ProPhoto working space, up the saturation to look nice, and then save as sRGB for the web . . . dink!
Question: when you were going for the gentle look were you trying for that in-camera or in post-processing? Just wondering . . .
