    The Red Arrows at RIAT

This weekend I ventured into a photographic territory I have not attempted before - an airshow. I took over 600 photos, most of them of the Red Arrows as I was trying to stick to a theme.

Here are a few whilst they were on the ground

A classic shot maybe ? My recent travel photography course has challenged me to include more people in my shots so these added to the weekends experiment - C&C welcome on this

4 & 5 We were able to get quite close to the aircraft and so I took the opportunity to take some details, (people in again)

6 Of course these beasts are better seen in the air, so here they are taxiing off

No, I was trying to get the raf man in, he was as in awe of the planes as me.

Thanks Dave and John. It was fun and the subjects just lended themselves to photography. I only had my 18-250 lens, there were some an awful lot bigger than mine!

    Very enjoyable series!

A few comments about #3 because it's in the style of what I call "Aunt Tillie in front of ___________." It's nice to include people to provide scale, to display people at work, to display people admiring objects, to display a connection between the person and the object, etc. I like in this one that including the person explains the reason for the blue rope. Even so, lacking an explanation of the connection between the person and the airplanes or between the person and the photographer, the image has the look of Aunt Tillie in front of the airplanes and not much more.

If I had been 100% on my game, I would have positioned myself so the entire row of airplanes could have been seen without being obscured by the woman. I also would have waited until the legs of people were not appearing behind the airplanes.

I would not go more than 250, Kaye....any bigger will not give you the angled shots and the formations...I once, accidentally, used the 15-500mm and it only gave me one plane, not the whole formation flights. So never again...and I use shutter priority for airshows and air races as these machines can be real fast. If I do not have Bill telling me when to shoot, I wouldn't know when to shoot...He used to be in the air race competition and I attended only once or twice and got scared he might not come home...he had one accident, broke his lower spine. What a relief when he retired from it...!!!

    Continued thanks for your comments.

Izzie that's an interesting comment you make about lens length. My husband has a (new) 150-600mm lens he was keen for me to try, but he was finding it difficult to use himself so I gave it a miss.

Mike thanks for the Aunt Tillie comments. I too prefer no people, but on this day it was very difficult to achieve and I am also experimenting with including people. I realise I have a long way to go on this! But my best mate will love being called Aunt Tillie in the meantime!

Kaye, I shoot at airshows and fly-ins from early summer to late autumn. Not everyday of course but once every month sometimes and almost everytime there is an airshow nearby...our next airshow outing is in Texas for the Red Bull Races...
