    I am going to get intentional with keeping it light.Perhaps that should be making it light when it's right?

    IMO you managed it Brian I think your color balance is a bit on the red side and that's why the image has a muddy look although the flower stands out. I'm uploading an edit just to give you an idea. Please let me know if you don't like the edit, I will take it down immediately.

    That's a lovely flower and I like this image, as I would much rather see flowers in their natural environment, rather than over a black background. Something else you might consider is reducing the saturation of the background and slightly brightening the flower. E.g. A rough edit (although, of course, I don't know its actual appearance!):
