    Spirals

Portugal again I'm afraid. There seemed to be a lot of spiral staircases in the Sintra palaces we visited. Thought they would make an interesting mono series. The last one is in mono just to complete the series but I particularly liked the warmth of the wood and the light spilling around the bottom stairs in the colour version hence both versions are included. C&C very welcome as always.

#2 thru #4 really work well for me because of the way they lead the eye through the image. #1 doesn't work nearly as well for me because I see two competing areas -- the stairs and the window.

Absolutely love the toning in the monochrome versions!

What a very enjoyable series of shots John.

My eyes keep coming back to #3. Straight lines, curvy lines and a way to walk between.

Come to think of this for a while and while I like them all, apart from the last one, it brought memories on when I recently saw some stairs I would like to shoot but can't. I did but I do not see any artistic endeavor in any of them so I tossed them out...All these shots are nicely presented, even #1 -- interesting concept.

    Re: Spirals

Thanks all for the comments. My own favourite is no.3. Not for it's photographic merit but because of the spiral on the inside of the stairs. Some artisan constructed that without the benefit of modern aids - computer modelling etc. Each piece was carved by hand and I guess by eye. It's beautiful work and all the more surprising to find it on a staircase that was principally there to allow access by the hired help to the chambers above. The Royals of course, would have used the grand Staircases.

Mike, got to agree about the first image. Very much a grab shot - that is grabbed after the person in front disappeared around the corner and before the person behind ran over me.

The handrail that you mentioned also immediately caught my eye as being both very interesting and unusual.

Not a good place to be run over, not that any place is.

An excellent series of images, John.

An interesting staircase and a wide angle lens can keep me entertained for a long time, much to the dismay of my wife and other family members who are trying to get up or down the staircase I am busily photographing.

Yes Manfred, I've noticed that a camera can sometimes outstay its welcome. They just don't understand.
