    Monochrome Mini Competition #23

    MONOCHROME Mini Competition

Since the aim of these is to get you taking and submitting photos, let see if it can also encourage people to post monochrome (black and white) images, even if that's not in their normal photography 'diet'.

    Here's how it works ...

    - You good folks post MONOCHROME images in the thread (please change your post title to a name for your picture)

    - When we get 10 images we will attach a voting poll

    - After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared!

    - If you would especially like some critique after the competition poll closes, please make it known in the post

    Too easy eh?

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread in this forum

Good shot. The Tokina is a good lens, isn't it? I don't use mine enough.

Thanks very much! I do love this lens. Like you, I don't use it enough, but I won't leave home without it.
When I first got the lens, I shot with it exclusively - just to learn how to use it - and got some truly horrid shots.
I've learned to be more selective, but the pendulum may have swung too far the other way.

    Thanks again!

    The Glenfarg Charity Walk

We had a charity walk (for some folk 20 miles, for others 10 or 5 miles) yesterday in our village. I did some snaps as a memento. They started off at 6:30am.

I have to say, Donald that your people shots are far better than most wedding shots I see. Perhaps you should do weddings? They look very good in BW, and I'm not sure they would have worked as well in colour. The more I see of BW the more I am convinced it's the way to go.

I think your people shots are fantastic and I'm very impressed. Indeed it was only back in January when I complained of a chest infection I benefited from the excellent work of the Heart Foundation and was cured of something I didn't even know I had and I am eternally grateful. Cheers Donald

    Hi Ellen,

Sorry you're struggling (we all did, even me the first time), have a read from the link below.

For starters, I would recommend the TinyPic method because it has the least restrictions or other "gotcha's".

    Wendy, Rob, Steve

Thanks for your comments ... and compliments.

This was new ground for me, both in terms of it being people-centred, but also something of a project for the day.

I obviously know the area very, very well. So planning the locations and what I wanted to do at each was pretty straightforward. The really big challenge was in relation to the lighting, particularly in the context of the clothing.

After 9am or so, it was very bright sunlight. And, of course they had secured sponsorship for a free supply of the very white tee-shirts, on top of which, the fashion this year must be for very black tracksuit bottom and tops. I have to confess that I resorted to coming off manual and spot metering at one stage and going onto Av with matrix metering (felt that I was cheating but it was the only way I could retain some sanity in terms of handling the light and the people at the same time). But I'll get better with practice.

Usually I like to sit and survey a scene for a while, then slowly assemble the kit (camera on tripod etc etc) and, in relaxed fashion take my readings, look at the clouds, decide on what to do, get Liveview on and compose and focus, wait for the light .. and do it. This was another set of circumstances altogether. One, I have to confess, I really enjoyed. And it has given me the real spark to now get on with a long-dreamed about project which is about my community - 'A Place and its People'.

ps - I made it clear to most of the people that appear in the photos that this is my hobby and that I DO NOT do weddings, family gatherings etc!! It's also the first time that most of these people, 99% of whom I know and socialise with, have seen any of my images. Luckily the response has been positive.

Right, after all that drivel in the few posts above, there are still only 6 images in here. So, 4 to go to make it 10.

HELP THREAD: How can I post images here?

    Cheers,
    Hi Dave,

Thanks for helping. See, the thing is, it wasn't my intention to post by replying the, Re: The Glenfarg Charity Walk. My intention was to post a new thread. Everytime I clicked on the "reply to thread" on top of this page I ended up replying to the abovementioned subject. I have figured it out how to attach my photo by using the tinypic but don't know how to post a new subject.

Got ur message in FB. Yes, I am busy at the moment gearing myself up in this new field I am currently into.

Would appreciate your further assistance here.
