    Confused regarding pixel size

My Photoshop has crashed again, his time it seems to have taken my entire computer along with it. I think that it all stems from my trying to update Photoshop CS6 so it could open the Raw Files from my SX50-HS camera. I seem to have an extra partially installed Photoshop and Adobe Bridge on my computer. I am calling my technician his morning and hopefully he can get to the bottom of the problem.

Anyway, I am using the Photoshop CS6 on my wife's computer and this is where my question arises.

When I save a RAW file shot with my Canon 7D camera on my version of CS6 as a PSD file, it saves in 300 Pixels size.

However when I save a RAW file shot with my Canon 7D camera using my wife's copy of CS6 as a PSD file, it saves in 240 Pixels size.

Where does the difference come from?

Richard it could be a different setting in ACR, go to the blue text at the bottom of your ACR screen when you have an image open. Look at the resolution setting you have it set for 300 pixels/inch your lovely wife's is set at 240. That is what I think it is, for me my printer wants files sent to it at 360 (Epson 4900).

    Cheers: Allan

I think it's a typical item for the preferences.
Do you mean size or the print resolution?

My condolences! I've had two crashes in the last few months where my tech had to re-format the HD on each occasion

Although I had back-up files, albeit less than recent, the pain of re-installing all the apps, photo and other, was almost too much to bear. And then, every site visited doesn't know you any more so out with the secret questions, etc, etc.

So good luck with your tech's solution . . .

Those numbers look like print resolutions to me. If so, they should have no bearing on saving the images. At least in LR (I print from LR, not PS), the Adobe default is 240 ppi, but I use 300, which is native for Canon printers.

The DPI are nothing other than something that you need to worry about unless you are printing and you are looking at the native resolution of the printers. Canon and HP photo printers have a native resolution of 300 DPI while Epson photo printers are 360 DPI.

In theory, if you print at those resolutions, your printer driver won't have to do any scaling and there could theoretically be a marginal print quality improvement, but personally, I've never found it makes a difference. I work to 360DPI with my own work, but suspect 240DPI is probably more than good enough.

If you are not printing, then don't worry about it.

Are you sure it is Photoshop that caused the problem? My laptop is now in service and been there since last week because it gave me the blue screen of death several times now. I kept ignoring it until it came to this point. But you know who the culprit is? -- On One Suite! -- everytime there is an upgrade, I refused it on this computer and this one is safe, but I everytime I do the upgrade on the laptop, it crashes on me until I totally refused to use it but it may have already caused so much damage. Hence it has to march to the service centre. The centre is supposed to contact me yesterday but they haven't...so I may have to call them up as soon as they open today...
