    Great Gray Owl

I am posting two shots because I think it is a beautiful animal. The one where the eye is blue is a photo of the nictitating membrane that adds extra protection to the eye. To find out more about its function Google it.

The posture of both shots is especially appealing; not the ordinary pose.

    Very nice.

Are these taken in the wild?

I'm glad you are enjoying them. This is a wild bird that lives in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA. I have seen this bird many times during the last two years, but this shoot is the first time that I have been able to get quality photos of it.

It is impossible for this owl not to see or noticed you...how did you do it? How far were you from this bird? Or should I ask, how far was the bird from you? I like the pose of #2...are they dangerous?

    Re: Great Gray Owl

Thanks to all for the nice words. I was pleased to finally have the opportunity to get these photos Greg. I have been looking for an opportunity, but this time I was just out with nothing special in mind. This bird was just sitting there, so I took its picture. Izzie, the owl knew that I was there, but it didn't seem to care. I was about 15 meters away. They are not dangerous to humans, but if you are a small rodent you are in danger.

I have photographed numerous birds that are showing the nictitating membrane, but it has always be milky white. The light was just right to have this one show up as blue.
