Two things come to mind Brian.

The bloom is lost in space. Try a tighter crop. (Think this would make it pop)
Maybe just a little to dead centered.

I'd crop too but only enough to make the foliage less obtrusive. Perhaps like this:



I'm partial to the harmonic mean (Golden Ratio) but others here might like the rose more central or even positioned further out per the 1/3rds rule.

I'd tone down the specular highlights where arrowed. Screenshot is from RawTherapee.

I like the splotches of water on the leaves. I think you can have equal portions of black and white within a composition and you can definitely have one tone emphasized more than the other. Have fun experimenting.

Gardenias do have a marvelous shape which is why I thought of B&W for the shot. Everybody agrees that the crop was a little(?) lose. I could have done more to the highlights than I did.

I usually start in rule of 3, move into fifths for fine tuning, check it out in harmonics and then finally with entered. And then a good old fashioned eye balling. But this tijke in do seem to have missed it.
