God, how refreshing that is to read.

I think the crux, in self-portraits, in the same way as with any other image, is that you realise your vision of what it is you wanted to create. In a self portrait you are looking inwards and then displaying to the world your vision of yourself. And, moreso than with any other type of image, no-one can tell you what that should look like. People can comment on the basis of like/dislike and offer technical advice. But your vision of yourself is truly unique.
