Re: A ruffled woody woodpecker
Thanks for the info Carol...Now I know...I have come to the point that when I looked at my feeder, I will ID them in my head automatically now and this one really puzzled me because I have only seen these on a tree very far away with my telephoto when I hear it tapping on a huge tree in front of my neighbour's house...and so I was sure (at first) that what I saw was a Hairy version. Then yesterday as I was resting in my deck, I saw him! He landed on a tree then on my feeder --- I cannot see the beak (according to Wiki's explanation) so I compare sizes and now I am sure it is the Downy as it is smaller and not as long as a robin...I sure learned something everyday, and this time, it is from you. Thanks a lot...

Try putting out some suet blocks for them, they really love that, also like apples, cut in half or quarters & stuck on a branch.

Izzie, you are most welcome! Woodpeckers are such interesting birds. This one is usually waiting in the morning for me to bring out the suet and fresh apple. Gives you a nice feeling to care for our feathered friends.
I also have a poor little one-eared rabbit, that is very tame; that is a frequent visitor.
Re: A ruffled woody woodpecker
A lovely photo, Carol. Have you considered changing the orientation of the crop from landscape to portrait? That would reduce the amount of yellow background and the tree trunk. Then you could possibly include the end of the tail feathers, which are currently missing
