    Red Sails

One of the annual events here is the 'Camakau' (traditional canoe) race around the harbour so I managed to dodge the rain enough to get a good selection this year. Not the best day for a sail race as wind was minimal but at least the midday light was an interesting challenge.

What was noticeable was the move to the less traditional sail colour.

    No 1 - 1/500s, f/8, ISO100, 180mm
    Red Sails

    No 2 - 1/500s, f/8, ISO450, 195mm
    Red Sails

    No 3 - 1/500s, f/8, ISO250, 80mm
    Red Sails

    No 4 - 1/500s, f/8, ISO280, 400mm
    Red Sails

For info, shot with the D800 and 80-400mm in manual using auto ISO.

From older photographs the majority tended to be an earthly yellowish brown colour, with the sails being made up of many stitched together sections. Whilst they are trying to maintain the traditions of building these craft I suspect the availability of modern materials is 'easier'.

Traditional or not, I am loving the colour contrast in these images, Grahame (red and blue; vibrant colour against neutral background; grey-green on grey-green). Just wishin' you had given us more of the reflections.

I'm just wishing I had thought of that whilst composing the shots now Janis

I'll re look at all my others to see if there are any where I can take more advantage of the reflections in the PP work.

Nice Grahame, I also like the contrast in the shots.

3 & 4 are my favourites, I like the composition in 3, from large to small nearly. And love the mountain backdrop in 4!

It was the contrasting sails against that bland background that appealed to me with these Matt. Previous ones I have taken have been on one of those 'perfect' blue sky days.

Lovely series... I especially adore #2 and #3, leaning slightly towards #3 for my favourite because it's dreamier, but #2 is wonderful for the close in view of the work at hand.

Nice series Grahame. I suspect that they can travel at quite a lick in a good wind? 1 & 3 for me.

    Thank you Christina.

You gave me an idea so I had another look through the bunch to see if I could find more 'dreamy' for you so I wonder if this has any merit?
