The light from the side was from the early sunlight, but flash is a great idea! They really don't have many predators, and really aren't afraid of much. When you leave both eyes open, try not to focus on of your off eye, its a secondary reference and can be confusing at times. You may get a little double vision some times with both eyes open. Close your off eye for a second and reopen it. The double vision will go away with some practice. Also try to hold the eye piece a little further away from your eye than normal, don't touch your eye with the eye piece. It might sound weird, and may not work for you but thats kinda how it works for me... Also if you can raise the illumination level on the spot on your view finder, that may help too.
